Transforming the child welfare system is a truly collective effort, requiring bold changemakers from across sectors to imagine a new way forward – and build it, together.
Foster America has been partnering with community and child welfare leaders in Colorado since our earliest days. Recently, we had the honor of visiting Larimer County, Colorado, to see firsthand the difference a community-based response system is making for children and families who might otherwise have been referred for a child protection investigation.
Larimer County’s community navigator program connects families to local resources, strengthening relationships between residents and communities to prevent formal child welfare involvement. Each family has a dedicated community navigator who provides customized support to meet the families’ needs.
Here, we share the stories of those who are making it possible – and the families who say their support has made all the difference: https://youtu.be/Y61wQsUO_lk
In 2026, Foster America marks a decade of building an alternative to a child welfare system rooted in crisis—and proving that families thrive when support comes early, with dignity, and led by community.
